Symbolism in ship accident

Symbolism in ship accident

The recent tragic collision between the war-ready United States destroyer and a lumbering cargo ship struck me with such symbolism that I have to share it.

The United States is the wrecked destroyer — crippled by an obvious threat. The large cargo ship slowly but surely almost sank the U.S.S. United States.

And let me name the cargo ship: Donald Trump. Anyone on board want to stand up and help keep the ship afloat, literally?

Just desserts for former elections clerk

A few years ago, Jamae Kawauchi was on a witch hunt.

If only she had looked in the mirror she would have saved the county a lot of time and money.

Depleted uranium poses real hazard

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) actions of June 13 denied Big Island residents a hearing about the dangers of inhaling depleted uranium (DU) oxide dust particles from military radiation at the 133,000-acre Pohakuloa Training Area.

These particles can be dispersed and carried long distance from PTA by the wind, military high explosives and other activity at PTA that creates dust. Neither the military, the NRC, nor the West Hawaii Today (June 16 article) want to deal with this main hazard of inhalation of DU oxide dust particles. They only talk about there being no external radiation hazard, which is not really an issue with DU.

The NRC and military actions fail to protect troops, residents, and visitors from the health dangers of inhaling DU oxide dust particles. In short, the NRC has issued the military a license to poison us. The military “mission” and efforts to avoid liability trumps all. Troops, residents, and visitors are being treated as lab rats for military experiments. Whatever happened to informed consent. I encourage everyone to view the short video, https://vimeo.com/19153948, by Hawaii doctor Lorrin Pang, MD, explaining the health dangers of inhaling DU oxide dust particles and judge for yourself if there are health dangers.

Traffic woe end in sight

Hopefully, in less than six months the beautiful, four-lane highway will be completed out from Kona airport all the way to town. They are really moving fast and I just want to thank God that we are getting near completion.

Traffic starting at 2 p.m. may be a thing of the past soon.
